Recognition on website INDY MOGUL for short film Blood Orange

11 07 2010

Indy mogul is a website I have been some what religious too for several years now. It is for indy filmmakers and provides lots of tips for making films, alot of my effects from the first three Faces were drawn from their “effect builds” such as Eddie getting impaled by the spear, darcy being cut in half on bondi and Daniel cutting his throat open.

Recently on one of the blogs my short film “Blood Orange” was featured.. Cheerin! http://www.indymogul.com/post/17702/5mmh-ep-7-blood-orange

The Face – Update – Final Touches + Revenue Sharing

22 06 2010

So its only a few days away until the release of my new short film The Face. It was just shown to the first test subject last night with some positive results so I am getting pretty excited!!

The only things left for me to do are:

  • Do some final touches to the score and soundtrack
  • Record a voice over for a news segment
  • Make the Credits (This will take all night as I am making the credits really cool)
  • Add some optical flares to the film for stylize

On another note, today marks a significant day for me as I have been approved by Youtube for Revenu Sharing. Basicly this means that Youtube will pay me money (about a 20th of a cent) for every hit I get on the video. The video that I was offered revenue sharing for (two weeks ago) and now have been approved on is The Face Trailer

The only other thing I have ever been requested youtube revenu sharing on was my Family Guy Compared video. However I had used copyrighted content on that video (family guy clips) so I couldn’t use it. I wasn’t suprised when a request for revenue sharing was made for that as it has over 7000 views. The thing that suprised me was the Face trailer getting it when it only has a bit over a thousand… but still cheerin!

The Face – Why the Face 3 was such a Failure…

10 05 2010

In my last Face Update (CLICK HERE if you missed it) I spoke about the budget of the new Face and how its only $25 compared to the budget of the previous installment being $120 AUD. I have noticed a connection between my films with higher budgets being bigger flops then ones with lower budgets.

This can be seen below:

So as you can see the video with the most views cost the least (THE FACE 1) and the film with the least at only 174 views is the Face 3 which had a budget of almost all the other films combined, not to mention the effort and time put into it over the others. As you can tell this kind of annoyed me a bit, however I dont really mean what I am talking about above as the reason for it, its just kind of ironic because it cost the most.

Here are the actual reason i think the Face 3 failed and how I am overcoming them in the new one:

  1. It went for 30 mins! this is a huge amount of someones time and a lot of people just dont have the time to watch something that long, I have learnt from this and the new one is no more then 5 mins long!
  2. It was on Vimeo and not youtube. The reason for this is obviously because youtube doesnt let you have films longer then 10 mins. This resulted in a lot less trafficking and ability to be discovered at all.  The fact that this blog post is pretty long means that most people wont even read this or get this far so if your still reading, nice one. The new one is back on youtube coz is under 10 mins.
  3. It was a sequal, I guess that people were just over it at that stage and not only that but it made it exclusivly viewable by people that had seen it in the past and were following the story. I have conqoured this by thinking long and hard about how I can make the story of this one viewable by anyone (like a reboot) but also with references to the last one so fans get rewarded too.

So their you have it, thats why it failed… and thats why the new one will succeed

P.S. In itself this is in some ways an attempt to get THE FACE 3 the views i think it deserves haha watch it here

7.51149 AUD

The Face – Update ~ Budget

7 05 2010

This new Face film is by far the cheapest of them all, I have spent the least on this out of any of the others in the series. Come to think of it, I have spent less on this film then any of my films.

This is what the budget consisted of:

£4.50 ($7.50 AUD) - Hospital Scrub Gown

£7.50 ($12.50 AUD) - Green Screen

£4.00 ($6.70 AUD) – My actor being a Jew*

TOTAL:    £15.50 ($24.80 AUD)**

So as you can see only $24.80 AUD, this can be compared with my last film (The Face 3) having a budget of $120 AUD, the thing is this film was a massive failure. I have managed to keep the costs down so much due to the utilization of the new technology that I have aquired. I havent spent any money on red food dye for this one, which is where a lot of the money has gone into previous films, the face 3 had $60 spent on the blood mix, that is half of its entire budget! All the blood in the new one in CG, in fact all of the effects are…  apart from  a severed arm prop.

My next Face update on monday the 10th of May  will go into depth about this and explain why The Face: Chapter 3 failed and how that is changing in the new Face. Stay tuned

*If this offends any Jews, dont take it so personally, Jew is used in the same way that “gay” is these days, its got another meaning in todays society

** This isn’t including a lot of stuff I got for free such as £10 000 worth of proffesional editing and compositing software and £50 worth of costumes and props I won off the website Silly Jokes.

The Face – Update ~ The Software I have used and learnt

6 05 2010

This is a list of some of the programs and plug-ins I have used for this movie in pre and post production, for those people that know a thing or two about filmmaking.

PRE-PRODUCTION:

  • ScreenWriter 6 - This I found really useful in creating the script with the proper formatting. It took a while to learn but is a real time saver.
  • ToonBoom Storyboarder – A useful program for creating storyboard easily, I used this for a couple of shots.

POST-PRODUCTION:

  • Adobe Premier Pro CS4 – To be honest I dont really think that this program is really neccessary if you have AE but if you cant afford both this is probably the better choice as its a swiss army knife of editing.
  • Adobe After Effects CS4 - My favourite piece of babe in the world, this program is seriously fucking sweet, endless possibilities with this beauty!
    • Plugins for AE:
      • Trapcode Particular – easily the best plug-in for AE, this baby lets you generate some awsome partical simulation, including the meteors and clouds seen in the new Face film.
      • Trapcode 3D Stroke – A cool plugin which allows for partical tracking with ease, used once in this film for the title “THE END” at the end (duh)
      • Video-Copilot Twitch – This plug-in is seriously awsome, saves me on several occasions in this film by helping me to distract the audience from some of the films dodgier effects, this plug-in is used for chaotic transitions and stuff like that and a little over used in the film, you will defs notice it!
      • Video-Copilot Film Magic Pro – Massive time saver, that allowed me to give the film a more proffesional look, basicly making it look as if it filmed with a better camera.
      • Magic Bullet – This pretty much does the same shit as the above but has some different and some better “camera looks”
      • Key Light - To tell the truth the chroma keying tool built in with AE is a piece of shit, never gets it right, however this baby allows you to get perfects chroma keys extremly easily. You will see where I have used the Chroma keying!
  • Boujou - This awsome program is basicly a 3D motion tracker that is completly amazing, it basicly scans a bit of video you have and tracks it, then you select which ones of the generated tracking marker are x,y and z dimensions and it generates a 3D camera for you of the footage that you can then use to track a 3D model perfectly. This program is worth $5000 and has been used in films like Transformers, it is seriously incredible.
  • Auto-Desk 3Ds Max - This is the software I have used for the 3D model of the exploding car. It is an extremly difficult program to use and incredibly complex. I have learnt a lot using it but still know shit all really. At this stage their are only two 3D effects in the film, however if I get enough time I hope to put more in as I have a lot of ideas, it just takes way too long. The car you can see in the teaser took 2 hours to render and export with my shitty computer! And that was for a 3 second clip! Its incredible how much time it takes. But I hope to develop my skills with this a lot more.
    • Plug-ins for 3Ds: (these plugins have not been used yet but the scenes I am working on that I hope I will get finished in time feature them)
      • FumeFX – This plug-in is an epic way of generating fire and smoke in 3Ds max with ease and realism, it can be seen in the film Kick-Ass when Big-Daddy is on fire.
      • RayFire Tool - This is an insane plugin that allows you to easily destroy objects you create such as a building. It can be seen put to good use in these two films

So their you have it, I hope it gave you some insight into all this stuff I have been raping my brain with and the many hours I am putting into this film. In the next Update I will tell you about the films Budget and what I spent money on..
